However, in the 1760s, Scotch-Irish colonists arrived and made it their home. The city was named after England’s War of the Roses, and our ancestors fought for their independence during the American Revolution. By 1786, York had become the York County Seat; the rest is history.
A visit to downtown will lead you to the York County courthouse, located on 2 South Congress Street, boasting a stunning historical marker. The courthouse has a rich history dating back to 1786 when it was constructed out of squared logs. Today, the building stands tall, featuring a combination of granite and brickwork, with a large entrance and striking Doric columns. The courthouse is listed in The National Register of Historical Places. It’s truly a magnificent sight to behold!
